Getting my eyebrows microbladed was the best thing I did for myself in 2018 (ok, maybe not the best, I did finally graduate in 2018) but it was damn near one of the best decisions I ever made.
Why?
Because my brows went from 1999 to 2019 and that to me is a priceless gift for my face.
I sadly started over tweezing my brows back in middle school and my brows never fully recovered. I tried letting them grow out. I tried using expensive serums. NOTHING was working. I resorted to makeup but didn't enjoy having to walk the fine line between having angry, overdrawn brows or doing them too light and barely making a difference.
Lucky for me, my sister Nikki found a Microblading artist through instagram and sent me her page. I scrolled for hours admiring all the before and afters of people with their brand new brows and knew I had to do it.

I am sharing my experience with my brow artist (who I think is the absolute best. Nikki and my mom ended up making appointments with her and getting their brows done too!) and answering some of the main questions I had. Don't forget to go through my gallery at the bottom to see a bunch of pics of our experience as well!
Q: How did you pick an artist?
A: I peeped the instragram, looked up reviews online, and checked yelp. You want to be sure that the person is experienced and has great reviews. They are working on your face so be sure to take your time doing your research. I only found glowing reviews online of my artist and I went into my appointment completely trusting her expertise.
Q: How did you know what shape and color to go with?
A: I am pretty bad at knowing what brow shape and color is best so I heavily relied on my artist. I knew I wanted to keep my brows looking as natural as possible so my artist recommended a shape that would use the eyebrow hair I already had to achieve a natural look and to fill in the sparse areas that needed work. She drew and measured them out for me and was completely open to any suggestions I had. She then suggested a few colors that could work for my face. Since I typically dye my hair lighter, she suggested a shade that was slightly lighter than my natural brow color. I was very happy with her expertise because I would have just thought to make them match and they could have ended up too dark or bulky for my taste.
Q: Does it hurt?
A: While signing the paper work and going over the healing process information, my artist put numbing cream on my brows so that the procedure would be painless. She also added a little more during the appointment to make sure I was completely comfortable the entire time.
Q: How long does it take to heal?

A: I was so glad my artist was upfront about the healing process. She even sent me this cute bitmoji explanation. For me, the first few days were very dark. I felt a bit like that meme with the chihuahua with the brows. During the healing process, they were a bit itchy at times and trying not to get them wet or use product on them was a slight adjustment (definitely worth it though). It is highly recommended to get a touch up within 6-8 weeks of getting them done, which I did. The healing process for the touch up was a bit similar but definitely again worth it. I think if you get them done on a Friday, by Monday they might still be a little dark but perhaps your coworkers will just think you're trying something new with your brows. They'll get lighter and look completely normal by mid week though.

Q: How long does microblading last?
A: I asked my artist this question and she mentioned that you lose about 20% each year so after 5 years, it will be almost all gone. I will probably keep getting touch ups done so that this doesn't happen.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: I looked online and it does vary between salons and people but most I saw in the SF Bay area was anywhere from $400-600. You are also going to want to tip your artist so be sure to factor that in to the cost as well. Usually the 6-8 week touch up is included in the original price or an additional $50-100 again depending on the artist. Future touch up prices vary. Your artist should be up front with the costs.
Q: Would you do it again?
A: In a fricken heart-beat! I wish I would have done it sooner and I will definitely be getting yearly or bi-yearly touch ups to maintain the look.
Also, my brow artist was IG @myphan17 in San Jose, CA. Me, Nikki, and my mom love her and how our brows turned out.
